According to the Theory of General Relativity, gravitational force creates curvature in space. This idea is used today to explain Starlight bending and Gravitational lensing. However, new investigations lead to consider another explanation for these phenomena. In the previous video, we saw that an atom consists of not only nucleus and electrons. The intra-atomic space is filled with a form of matter, and the slowdown of light speed in a medium (reason for refraction) is because of the interaction of light with this matter. Now, if the intra-atomic space is not empty, it is reasonable to think that, the space itself is not empty. In fact, experimental data also support this idea. For example, photons can produce matter-antimatter pairs from space. This provides a new insight into Starlight bending and Gravitational lensing. Because of gravity, a massive object maintains a denser region of the above-stated matter around the object. When light passes through this region, the light speed will get slow down and refracted. Individually as well as collectively stars can refract light. A denser region can create a lensing effect when light passes through that region at appropriate angles. We know that different wavelength photons have different rates of slow down in a medium (this is the reason for dispersion). This fact can help to verify the "refraction theory" of Starlight bending and Gravitational lensing.
