US President Donald Trump voiced fresh optimism after a high-stakes meeting between senior US officials and a Ukrainian delegation in Miami, saying there was a “good chance” that a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine could soon be reached. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said the negotiations were “going along well,” marking one of his most hopeful assessments to date of the ongoing diplomatic push.

The comments followed a cautious but upbeat briefing from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described the Miami session as “productive and useful” while warning that the talks remained “delicate” and “complicated.” Rubio underscored that any final agreement would require Russia’s direct involvement, noting that “another party” must be part of the equation. Special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow for discussions with President Vladimir Putin, signaling an intensification of the diplomatic track.

Ukraine’s delegation in Miami, led by National Security and Defence Council chief Rustem Umerov, called the talks “productive and successful” and said they built on progress made in Geneva a week earlier. Umerov said the US remained “super supportive” as Kyiv seeks long-term security guarantees, a ceasefire along current front lines, and a framework that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and future prosperity. Umerov’s appointment came just days after the resignation of Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, amid a corruption scandal.

Despite movement on revisions to the 28-point peace blueprint originally drafted by Witkoff and Kremlin-linked envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Russia has signaled little willingness to concede ground. Putin has maintained that the war will only end once Ukrainian troops withdraw from territories they “occupy,” and the Kremlin said the latest draft requires “serious analysis.” Trump, who previously floated a Thursday deadline for Ukraine to accept a deal, has now stepped back from any timeline, saying, “The deadline for me is when it’s over.”

The diplomatic progress comes as Ukraine faces sustained Russian missile, bomb and drone attacks, with nearly 1,400 attack drones and more than 1,100 guided aerial bombs used in the last week alone, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kyiv continues to strike deep inside Russia with long-range drones and missiles, including recent attacks on two sanctioned Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea. Meanwhile, former Ukrainian military chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi warned that the conflict may not end in a clear-cut victory, writing that Ukraine must remain open to a “long-term end to the war.”
