As a young adult, Caesar (Gaius Julius) was traveling to the East to study rhetoric from the Greek scholars, and visit the shrines of his ancestors (Aeneus and Aphrodite). After passing through the Greek Isles, Caesar's ship was accosted by pirates. Caesar was taken captive and brought to an isolated cove in the Aegean that they called home.

During that time, Junior Senators could command a ransom of 1/2 talents (measurement by weight) of gold. Subjects in the area owing fealty to Rome would pay the ransom, with understanding of repayment (but mostly never received).

Caesar, with typical arrogance, demanded that nothing less than 10 talents would do for his ransom. 10 talents was a former Consul's ransom. The ransom was paid, begrudgingly by Rhodes out of fear of reprisals from Rome. The Rhodians resented Caesar when he was returned. Upon, arrival, Caesar demanded 20 ships to take the pirate stronghold, full of loot. The Rhodians laughed at Caesar, since it was impossible to find pirate coves. Unknowing to them, Caesar had kept count of landmarks, thought impossible to differentiate.

Caesar received his ships and returned to the pirate cove. The pirates were taken captive and their loot seized. Each and every pirate was crucified. The loot entirely was given to the city of Rhodes, except for a few choice pearls and small amount of gold Caesar deemed special.
