There's a lot of technical nuance to preparing a cricket pitch and reading it right. It's almost like a parallel sport. How much do you water it close to the game? What role does the weather play? How much live grass do you leave on? And what kind of rollers do you use, and when? You could soak up every bit of such information from the inner-sanctum of a ground staff and still end up looking dumbfounded when the match begins. India and South Africa have reached Guwahati with one such experience.
All said, the visitors don't have much to complain about. They rode the vagaries of Eden Gardens and came out on top. India, on the other hand, are on a sticky wicket. Chatter around the pitch and turn from Kolkata has spilled into the lead-up in Guwahati, as they look for series parity and valuable WTC points. South Africa, meanwhile, have a historic series win in their crosshairs.

Amidst such contrasting aspirations, there's still a common thread for the two teams. Guwahati becomes India's 30th Test venue, a place where no player from the two teams - barring Mohammed Siraj in 2016 - carries any experience of playing red-ball cricket. Yet, from what both teams have seen of the red soil pitch with a tinge of green, they're fully anticipating a familiar subcontinental template.
"The wicket looks a lot fresher than Kolkata," South Africa captain Temba Bavuma offered one day out from the game. "A little bit more grass on the wicket, so I guess it looks like it'll play a lot better in terms of the variability of the bounce. But yeah, we'd like to have one more proper look in the morning. I think it'll be more of a traditional subcontinent wicket. Good for batting on first two days, and then on day three the spinners should come into play."
