India and Germany have signed a landmark strategic partnership to jointly manufacture advanced ammunition, reflecting a deeper defence alignment between Europe and India. The collaboration involves German defence major Rheinmetall and India’s Reliance Defence, with both sides signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the agreement.

At the heart of this tie-up is the plan to establish a greenfield manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The plant will be designed to produce a range of advanced munitions, including artillery shells, tank ammunition, smart munitions, and potentially submunitions and smart fuses.

This partnership supports India’s broader ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision by bolstering indigenous arms manufacturing and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. It also ensures a more secure wartime supply chain amid ongoing global instability.

For Germany, which is facing ammunition shortfalls due to the war in Ukraine, the partnership offers strategic supply resilience and access to India’s robust industrial infrastructure. The collaboration underscores a shift in global defence supply chains, as Western nations seek dependable partners in Asia.

The first batch of co-produced ammunition is expected within 24 months, aiming to serve both Indian military requirements and global export markets, especially across the Global South.

This agreement is more than just about arms—it’s about building mutual trust, strengthening Indo-European military cooperation, and creating a future-ready security framework in an increasingly volatile world.
