Chapter IV – The Time Traveller

He had always believed decisions were made with reason. That choices came from clarity. But as he stood before the temporal activation panel, he understood this was not a decision at all.

It was desperation.

He knew the truth before his hand even touched the control surface—going back would not restore what he lost. Even if he found the answer, even if he changed the past, the future he came from no longer existed to be saved. What had been destroyed was beyond reconstruction.

Yet the thought of continuing alone felt worse than dying.

Pain speaks in whispers. Fear, in silence. And in that stillness, something deeper rose inside him—the hunger to keep existing, even if existence meant becoming a consequence rather than a solution.

Only one thought echoed clearly:

“Even the smallest chance. Even if it changes nothing. I must go.”

He initiated the temporal sequence.

The ship trembled gently, as if it were exhaling for the first time since the collapse. Panels lit up in pale blue. The air pressure shifted. A resonance filled the cabin—halfway between a heartbeat and a hum. It grew gradually, like a ripple spreading across reality.

A distant chime sounded, muted and submerged, like a bell sinking underwater.

He felt time bend around him—not like motion, but like a memory being rewritten while still being lived.

He thought of his mother placing a blanket on his shoulders when he fell asleep at the table. His father tracing constellations. His brother waiting eagerly for him to return.

He knew none of them were waiting anymore.

He placed a hand over his chest and found no steady rhythm. Only an irregular pulse—the body’s protest against moving in a direction without promise.

His mind argued once more:

“You cannot fix this.”

“I know.”

“You cannot undo what has happened.”

“I know.”

“Then why go?”

He closed his eyes.

“Because I am still alive.”

The temporal fissure opened like light folding into itself. Space distorted. The stars outside elongated, then vanished. The console went silent as all readings lost meaning.

He felt no acceleration. No impact. No certainty.

Only movement—into something not yet written.

He was not traveling to save his family.

He was traveling because the absence of them felt unbearable.

He was not traveling toward hope.

He was traveling away from despair.

And as the final echo of the future faded, he whispered into the dissolving air:

“If there is even the smallest chance to prevent what happened…”

“I will take it.”

He leaned back, not with resolution, but exhaustion.

He did not believe in salvation.

Only in motion.

And so he became the traveler of time.
