2024 Mini Countryman Review: Big Personality In A Bigger Package

The 2024 Mini Countryman takes the brand's playful persona and stretches it to new lengths – literally. Now larger than vehicles like the Nissan Qashqai, this third-generation Countryman makes a bold statement that a Mini can be family-sized.

While that notion may turn off some fans, there's no mistaking this crossover's unmistakable Mini spirit.

Pumped-up proportions give the Countryman an undeniably distinctive appearance. The elongated body and increased ride height scream SUV, but the signature styling cues – rounded headlights, contrasting roof, upright windshield – keep it squarely a Mini. It's an eye-catching design that's also quite practical, with adult-friendly accommodations in both rows and a usable 450-liter cargo area.

Up front, the Countryman maintains its eccentric Mini vibe. The oversized circular display sprouts from the dashboard like a futuristic mushroom, housing both the infotainment and digital instrument cluster. While novel, stuffing so many functions here proves a bit overwhelming. Some key controls, like the gearshift toggle, are also fiddly. But premium materials and funky textiles inject plenty of style.

Performance ranges from perfectly acceptable to pulse-quickening. The base 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder provides adequate thrust, while the range-topping 296-hp John Cooper Works model brings hot-hatch hustle. The electric variants offer 201 hp or a gutsier 309 hp, but at lofty prices. All variants come standard with an eight-speed automatic.
Keen handlers have been a Mini hallmark, and the Countryman upholds that tradition – for better or worse. Precise steering and a buttoned-down chassis allow this big Brit to change directions like a hot hatch, though the stiff-legged ride may prove too firm over rough roads. The JCW doubles down on athleticism with a tauter suspension, but loses some of that playful Mini verve in the process.

With a well-equipped Countryman easily cresting $40,000, the value proposition takes a hit. But few crossovers combine practicality and personality quite like this extroverted, super-sized Mini. Just don't expect the same city-friendly driving dynamics as its smaller siblings. The Countryman's bigger footprint forces a few compromises, but its underlying DNA remains unmistakably Mini.
