How To Create A Minimalist Office Design Ideas for Better Productivity - In a study by Princeton University, researchers found that physical clutter in our surroundings competes for our attention, resulting in decreased performance, stress, and productivity.
On the other hand, a clean and organized workspace can enhance focus and concentration, leading to better performance and increased creativity.
Personally, I love having a minimalist workspace because the benefits of a minimalist office design extend beyond just productivity.
It can create a calming and soothing environment that reduces stress levels, enhances mental clarity, and fosters a sense of well-being.
Here are three strategies you can start using today to embrace a minimalist office design and boost your productivity.
Get rid of nearly everything.
Well, duh, Chris...I can hear you. But honestly, if you want a minimalist space, it's time to get rid of the things that clutter your environment.
What's on my desk? My computer. My notebook. A pencil. And that's all. Oh, I also have a small rock on my desk, but that's a story for another time.
When your desk is clean and clear of distractions, the only thing available to you is to focus.
The same holds for your entire office. Put it away if it is not used frequently or is insanely beautiful. Better yet, if you rarely use it, get rid of it completely.
Get the light right.
You'd be surprised how lighting can affect your productivity.
Make sure your office has the right lighting. Natural light is best, but if you don't have access to natural light, ensure you get enough artificial lighting to illuminate the entire room without creating glare.
I have task lighting from a functional lamp in my office in the corner near my desk.
There is also a small light that illuminates a single plant in the office. Minimalist-me doesn't see the need for a plant, but my minimalist wife said it was a good idea, so who am I to argue?
Finally, I have ambient lighting to create a nice room glow that makes me happy.
Only the tech you need.
Too much tech can lead to overwhelm. Overwhelm leads to inaction. Inaction leads to a poorly performing business.
So let's minimize the tech. One strategy would be removing all the tech and bringing things back into play as needed.
Scrutinize carefully.
Ask yourself, "Do I need this?"
A hallmark of office minimalism is a minimal workspace. You'll be amazed at how good it feels.
Pro tip
Check this out. On most operating systems, you have a "dock" or "menu" with the applications you use so you can mouse over and click on them.
You can save space, clutter, and time by never using those features and instead learn how to use keyboard shortcuts to start applications.
Cool right?
Here’s The Bottom Line.
It’s true.
Simplifying your office will pay off big.
Just not in the way you are used to.
And it takes time and determination to get it done and keep it that way.
But once you start, you'll see that it can help your business in amazing ways.
