Dr. Aniketh Venkataram, noted cosmetic surgeon at the Venkat Center for Aesthetic Health at Banashankari in Bengaluru, speaks of plastic surgery for a person who has lost a massive quantity of weight. Dr. Aniketh appreciates the fact that people have taken ‘charge of their lives’ and lost a lot of weight. Whether by diet, exercise or bariatric surgery, sudden weight loss, will lead to sagging skin around the abdomen, under the chin, under the arms and on the inner thigh.
Even though a person feels great about the weight loss journey, there is always a psychological facet of the person feeling uncomfortable with the sagging skin, and a normal lifestyle may be marred by the sagging skin. This is also related to the person feeling like they are still in the past 110-kilogram body when they are feeling like 70 kilograms, a shift that they cannot feel.
Dr. Aniketh then goes on to say that there no non-surgical ways to remove so much skin, and then steps into the various types of plastic surgery in different areas of the body. So fundamentally, the surgical procedures are about removing extra skin. There’s an arm lift surgery for the skin on the arms, a lower body lift surgery for the abdominal area, a chest lift for men or a breast lift surgery for women, and an inner thigh lift for the thighs. He also states that not all these surgeries are required for an individual and the number of procedures may vary.
The most common surgery after weight loss is the lower body lift surgery. Dr. Aniketh explains the procedure by starting off with the fact that the surgery is done under general anaesthesia, and a person can go home after two days. The scar post-surgery is very low and is covered by a person’s underwear. This is a major surgical procedure and it involves sutures on the front and the back, and a person cannot bend too far frontwards or too far backwards, and will need help in the first week after the surgery. Two weeks after the surgery, a person will be able to look after themselves. The person can start going out or report to work after three weeks of the surgery.
Dr. Aniketh then says that patients are usually very happy after a lower body lift surgery as there is a major difference in the way they look, especially with a flat abdomen, adding confidence with this transformative surgical procedure. He then shifts to surgeries on the arm, in which the scar runs from the elbow to the axilla, the thigh lift surgery, in which there is a scar all along the inner thigh, and finally the chest or breast lift surgery, in which there is a scar under the chest or breast.
Next, Dr. Aniketh speaks of staging the surgeries, as all the surgeries cannot be done in one day as it affects the body’s capacity to heal. So the surgeries are done in two or three stages. Typically, there is a gap of three to four months between each stage of surgeries and two surgeries such as the lower body lift can be combined with an arm lift, or a chest or breast lift can be combined with an inner thigh lift, or the type of surgery depends on the opinion on the surgeon.
In conclusion Dr. Aniketh says that plastic surgery after weight loss is a really gratifying experience because a person gets to leave their hundred-plus body behind and live as a new person. He also invites viewers to get in touch with the Venkat Center for Aesthetic Health.
