Discovery and confirmation

Initial sighting: The comet was initially spotted on July 1, 2025, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile.

Interstellar origin: Astronomers confirmed its origin outside of our solar system by tracking its hyperbolic orbital path, which indicates it is not gravitationally bound to the sun.

Journey through our solar system

Orbital path: The comet is currently on a trajectory that takes it through our solar system before it continues its journey back into interstellar space.

No threat to Earth: 3I/ATLAS will pass at a safe distance of about 1.8 astronomical units (170 million miles) from Earth and poses no danger.

Closest approach to the sun: It is expected to make its closest approach to the sun around October 30, 2025, passing just inside the orbit of Mars.

Scientific significance

Rare opportunity: As one of only three known interstellar objects, 3I/ATLAS offers scientists a rare chance to study an object from a distant star system.

Composition and origin: By studying its composition and other physical properties, scientists hope to gain clues about the formation of worlds far beyond our own.

Observed by multiple missions: Missions and observatories, including the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, have been used to observe the comet and gather crucial data.

Not related to microscopy

It's important to note that the "3i" in the comet's designation is not related to the advanced microscopy company Intelligent Imaging Innovations (3i). The "3" indicates it is the third interstellar object discovered, and the "I" stands for interstellar. The latter part of the name, "ATLAS," refers to the telescope network that first detected.

"Given the limited reservoir of heavy elements, we should have discovered on the order of a hundred thousand interstellar objects on the 0.1-kilometer scale of 1I/`Oumuamua before finding 3I/ATLAS, yet we only detected two interstellar objects previously."
