Ecological Limits & Systemic Breakdown
Workshop from the Rev21 May 2025 Online Convention
What happens when a civilisation exceeds the boundaries of a liveable planet?
This workshop will explore the hard scientific truths about energy, resource depletion, and the failure of green growth narratives. More importantly, it will ask: what kind of societies can thrive within planetary limits?
🛠️ Essential for activists, strategists, and anyone designing a post-carbon world
⚠️ Warning: This session may challenge your assumptions – and galvanise your action
Participants:
Simon Michaux: Simon Michaux is an Associate Professor of Geometallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), within the Circular Economy Solutions Unit (KTR). He holds a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Physics and Geology, as well as a PhD in Mining Engineering from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at the University of Queensland. Michaux has 18 years of research and development experience in the Australian mining industry, spent 12 months working in the private sector at Ausenco, and spent 3 years in Belgium at the University of Liege focusing on Circular Economy and industrial recycling. Before joining KTR, he worked in the Minerals Intelligence division within GTK’s MTR unit. His long-term goal is to evolve the Circular Economy into a more practical framework to help the industrial ecosystem address two major challenges: the scarcity of technology-critical minerals and the transition away from fossil fuels.
James Dyke: James Dyke is an academic, writer, and author. He is an Associate Professor in Earth Systems Science at the University of Exeter where he serves as the Assistant Director of the Global Systems Institute, and Deputy Director of the Environmental Intelligence Centre for Doctoral Training. James is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the European Geosciences Union, and serves on the editorial board of the journal Earth System Dynamics. He is the environmental columnist for UK newspaper i, and has written over 100 articles for international publications that includes The Ecologist, The Guardian, The Independent and The Conversation. His book Fire Storm and Flood: the violence of climate change was published in 2021 by Bloomsbury imprint Head of Zeus. James is regular contributor to UK and international media.
Leon Simons: Leon Simons is a climate researcher and science communicator at the Club of Rome Netherlands and is studying the effects of reduction in sulfur emissions on regional and global radiation changes and its impact on global heating.
Moderated by Clare Farrell: Clare Farrell is a British climate activist, fashion designer, and educator, best known as a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion (XR), the global environmental movement advocating for urgent action on climate change through nonviolent civil disobedience.
With a background in the UK fashion industry, Farrell has worked across high street, luxury, and ethical sectors. She has been educating on fashion, ethics, and sustainability for over a decade, including teaching at Central Saint Martins. Recognizing the limitations of sustainable fashion within the broader context of environmental degradation, she shifted her focus toward systemic change.
In 2018, Farrell co-founded Extinction Rebellion, contributing significantly to its name, visual identity, and messaging. She coordinated the creative team that developed the movement's distinctive symbols and materials, aiming to create an accessible and replicable brand for global activism. Farrell also co-edited the best-selling book This Is Not a Drill: An Extinction Rebellion Handbook and continues to serve as a spokesperson and media coordinator for XR in the UK.
Farrell's activism includes participation in high-profile actions, such as the 2021 protest where nine women, including herself, were acquitted after breaking windows at HSBC's London headquarters to highlight the bank's investment in fossil fuels. She has been arrested multiple times for her involvement in civil disobedience campaigns, underscoring her commitment to confronting the climate crisis.
