Exploring M/S "Hamen" from 1949. Laid up since 1985.

Описание к видео Exploring M/S "Hamen" from 1949. Laid up since 1985.

In 1960, a new oil-fired power station was commissioned in Portsmouth, and "Pompey Power" became redundant. Tandberg & Møinichen in Drammen bought "Pompey Power" and named it "Tandik". "Tandik" sailed the North Sea and Baltic Sea for a couple of years, but was an old ship and it was, among other things, difficult to obtain steam engineers.

Hans Utkilen in Bergen bought the ship in 1962 and named it "Hamen", at the same time he replaced the steam engine with a 9-cylinder Norwegian-built Wichmann 9acat diesel engine. Today, this engine is a technical cultural monument in itself. Without this machine, HAMEN would probably have been cut during the 80s, as happened with the ships that retained the steam engine for too long.

As HAMEN, the ship carried coal, ore, pig iron, lumber and general cargo in a very varied speed. The speed range could stretch all the way from France to Murmansk. When HAMEN was launched in 1985, it was the oldest ship in the Norwegian foreign fleet. HAMEN is today a very rare ship, has a high age in terms of ship engineering, and can vividly illustrate the social, living and working conditions on board the ships from Norway's heyday as a maritime nation.

The ship represents an era in Norwegian maritime history of which little has been preserved and is a completely natural addition to the Norwegian Association for Ship Protection.

Today's owners are Stiftelsens Hamen. The intention and vision is that in an authentic environment you can tell about the work and living conditions of Norwegian seamen in European and overseas foreign shipping, their efforts in Norwegian foreign shipping over more than 150 years, about foreign shipping and about maritime history in general.
