The Foster Wheeler vertical roll pulverizer, also called the “wheel roll” mill, uses a rotating grinding table and heavy rollers to crush coal. The SHMP model retains the same principle, with several localized design features for Chinese power plants. The grinding mechanism consists of a horizontal table (diameter 2.5–3.5 m for 500–1000 MW units) driven by a planetary gearbox. Three or four grinding rolls press against the table under spring or hydraulic loading, exerting grinding force of 60–100 kN per roller.

Raw coal, sized below 50 mm, is fed into the center of the table from a pressurized coal feeder. As the table rotates at about 25–35 rpm, centrifugal force spreads the coal outward into the grinding zone. The rollers trap the coal and reduce it to fine particles. At the same time, hot primary air from the boiler air preheater (250–320°C) enters the mill housing, drying the coal and lifting the fine fraction upward.

An integral classifier above the grinding zone separates the pulverized fuel. Coarse particles return to the table for further grinding, while fines are transported with the air stream to the furnace burners. For subcritical boilers, fineness targets are typically 70–75% passing 200 mesh (75 μm). For supercritical boilers, SHMP designs allow tighter classification, up to 80–85% passing 200 mesh, to improve combustion efficiency and reduce unburnt carbon in fly ash.

The SHMP Foster Wheeler design is scaled for various unit sizes. For a 600 MW class unit, a single pulverizer handles 45–60 tons per hour of coal. For 1000 MW units, capacity rises to 70–90 tons per hour. Motor ratings are in the range of 800–1200 kW, with input speeds of 750–1500 rpm reduced to bowl speed via the gearbox. The outlet air-fuel mixture temperature is maintained at 70–80°C, balancing safe operation with adequate drying.

Maintenance of grinding parts is central to mill performance. The grinding rolls and table liners are exposed to continuous abrasion from coal ash minerals. SHMP supplies wear-resistant alloy segments, and many plants upgrade to hardfaced or ceramic composite parts to extend service life. Typical service intervals for roll refurbishment are 6,000–8,000 operating hours, depending on coal abrasiveness. Hydraulic roll loading allows consistent grinding force, even as surfaces wear, improving stability.

Safety features include explosion vents, CO monitoring, and inerting systems using CO₂ or N₂ during startup and shutdown. Rejects such as pyrites and stones are discharged through a dedicated pyrite hopper to prevent damage to the rollers. Mill differential pressure (normally 6–12 inches water column) is a key indicator of coal bed buildup and classifier performance. Vibration sensors on gearbox and roller assemblies provide early warning of imbalance or bearing failure.

In operation, Foster Wheeler–SHMP vertical roll pulverizers deliver steady coal fineness and throughput, which directly support boiler performance. Balanced fuel distribution across burners stabilizes furnace flame temperature (1700–1800°C), lowers NOx emissions, and minimizes unburnt carbon. With proper alignment, lubrication, and wear management, these pulverizers achieve long operating runs between planned outages.
