リードは生涯で5曲の交響曲を残しています。
中でもアメリカ空軍バンドの委嘱で1988年に作曲されたこの作品は、
60代という作曲家として円熟期にあったリードの真骨頂が味わえる作品です。

曲は3つの楽章から成り立っていて、それぞれに全く違う魅力を持っています。
第一楽章は低音楽器や打楽器による重々しい同音連打とトランペットの主題から始まる序奏部と、それに続く激しい嵐が吹き荒れるような主部、
そしてその盛り上がりが最高潮に達したところで再び序奏の主題が現れる終結部からなります。

第二楽章は一転して静かでゆったりとした音楽です。
この楽章には「ワーグナーの『ポラッツィ』の主題による変奏曲」という副題が付けられています。
ポラッツィとはワーグナーがその生涯の最期を家族と過ごした村の名前で、冒頭オーボエとクラリネットによって奏でられる印象的な旋律は、妻のために捧げられた愛のメロディーでもあります。

第三楽章は多くの人がこの作品の中で最も「リードらしい」と感じる楽章ではないでしょうか。
短い序奏の後にホルンが勇ましく主題を奏で、この主題がフーガのように展開されます。
その後第二、第三の主題が現れ、打楽器のアンサンブルなどいろんな形で受け渡されて行き、それらが絡み合うように圧倒的なクライマックスを構成します。

Alfred Reed composed five symphonies during his lifetime.Above all, "Symphony No. 3"shows the true worth of Alfred Reed's music in his mature 60s as a composer.
It was written for the U.S.Air Force Band in 1988.
This symphony built in three movements, and each movement has its own attraction.

The first movement starts with the repeated serious hittings of the low tone brass wind instruments and the percussion instruments and main theme played by the trumpets.
Following this introduction part, it appears the melody like a violent storm in the main part of the first movement.
And the powerful main part comes to the climax, main theme same as its in the introduction part again.

The second movement is distinct from the first movement.By contrast with the first movement,the second movement is silent and comfortable.The subtitle of this movement is "Variations on the 'Porazzi' Theme by Richard Wagner".
"Porazzi" is a name of village where Richard Wagner spent last time with his family.
The impressive melody in the first part of the second movement played by oboes and clarinets is an affectionate melody dedicated for his wife.

Many people may feel the third movement is " so Alfred Reed "the most.
It starts with the short introduction, and the stirring main theme played by horns appears, and then this main theme unfolds like a fugal style.
After that, it appears the second theme and third theme, those themes unfold in a variety of patterns such as its played by an ensemble of percussion instruments.
Those variety patterns of theme gradually interweave until they reach a overwhelming climax.
