The Avatamsaka Sutra is considered the pinnacle of Mahayana Buddhist sutras, with one of the most elaborate presentations of Buddhist cosmology – the ‘Treasury of Flower Adornments, Ocean of Worlds.’ This visual presentation is the third in a three-part series on Buddhist cosmology. The first installment, Escape from Samsara*, presented the most basic understanding of a single universe or ‘world-system’ (lokadhatu). The next installment, The Inconceivable Realm*, expanded these ideas to include not only one world-system, but a billion world-systems co-existing in a Buddhist multiverse. The final installment of this series attempts to visualize the most complex, expansive Buddhist view of creation – an ocean of world-systems.
