I'm John Curry, I'm the co-owner of Buona Caffe Artisan Roasted Coffee with my wife Pat. Um, we roast coffee. [chuckles]

Buona Caffe's been in existence since 2010. The coffee shop here on Central Avenue has been open since 2013, just over five years. My wife and I were journalists for a long time. I was in the newspaper business for over 35 years. So we drank a lot of coffee, you know, anyway, so I always loved coffee and I had bought a book on home coffee roasting and we got, I got a small home coffee roaster, and I started doing it as a hobby. We'd have friends over they'd have our coffee and they'd say, "This coffee is so good! Why is your coffee so good? Can I--" you know, then I'd tell them I roasted it-- "Can I buy some?" It's like, that's sort of how it all started.

2012 was the first year we were voted best coffee in Augusta and we didn't even have a coffee shop. And we've won every year since and the best of Augusta competition by
Augusta Magazine. The first way I got involved with the UGA SBDC was probably through just reading or seeing them around, especially when we're opening the shop, they were instrumental in helping us get an SBA loan to help with the startup of the shop here. Our main takeaway from the UGA SBDC and all the things we've gone to with them, and the consulting, it's just, you know, it-- they help you to think and think outside of what your your norms are. So you might be a really good baker, but you might not know anything about financials so there's a lot of different aspects that they can help you with. I know we've learned a lot from them and through them.
