I have loved this mountain ever since the day I laid eyes on it for the first time more than 25 years ago. Agathla Peak is a monolith that erupts dramatically from the Navajo lands. This 1500-foot spearhead welcomes you as you approach Monument Valley. It serves as a harbinger for the beauty and majesty you are about to experience, not only in Monument Valley, but all over the border of Utah and Arizona.

It is a volcanic plug that formed from a diatreme (volcanic pipe), where volcanic gas spewed from. 25 million years ago, this area was an active lava field. This fact is not obvious to you, but when you travel from Flagstaff to Moab, the entire landscape is made up of cinder cones that reveal the ancient past.

Agathla comes from the Navajo word, aghaałą́, which means much "Much Wool". I assume this was from the jagged rocks scrapping the wool from the sheep, antelope, and deer as the herds pass by. It used to be a climbing destination. I am sure it's name quickly became "Much Skin", but don't ask me how to say that in Navajo.

I have taken its picture every time I passed her. This time I flew my drone by to get a close-up. I have to admit, I have fallen more madly in love with this mountain.
