The Wu family case, which inspired the 2022 Taiwanese horror film Incantation, occurred in 2005 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A family of six, deeply rooted in superstitious beliefs, experienced a shared delusion or mass hysteria, believing they were possessed by various Chinese folk deities (e.g., Ne Zha, Guanyin) while accusing each other of demonic possession. The youngest daughter’s claim of possession triggered escalating bizarre behaviors, including self-harm, burning skin with incense, consuming feces, and refusing food, only drinking water with talismans. The eldest daughter, Wu Fengjuan, died within a month from starvation, exhaustion, and injuries, with her death initially attributed to organ failure and self-harm.

The family’s home was found in disarray, with fecal matter and strange symbols on walls. Psychiatric evaluations diagnosed shared delusional disorder, likely worsened by extreme beliefs, sleep deprivation, and malnutrition. The surviving members faced charges of "abandoning a helpless person resulting in death" but were acquitted, as the eldest daughter’s death was ruled self-inflicted. Theories range from genuine possession to psychological breakdown, mold poisoning, or exploitation by religious figures, though no definitive cause was confirmed. The case remains a chilling example of how fervent superstition can spiral into tragedy.
