1932 Martin OM-18 Shade Top | Carl Miner

Martin first launched their OM in 1929, in response to requests from banjo players like Perry Bechtel for a powerful guitar that they could play in dance band settings. It was the first 14-fret steel-string flattop with a longer scale length, a major innovation away from the short scale 12-fret 000s and smaller guitars, and one that would quickly lead to the dreadnought and other louder 14-fret acoustic guitar designs. Made at the peak of the model's initial run, this 1932 OM-18 Shade Top is a testament to the wonder of this design, and one that will make you a believer in the magic of vintage guitars (if you weren't already, that is!). As you'll note from the assorted battle scars, it may not be a closet queen. But it certainly has that well-earned tone that makes vintage mahogany guitars so sought after, being equal parts dry and warm, punchy and woody.
