The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a sealed-cover forensic report on the authenticity of leaked audio clips allegedly implicating Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh in the state’s ethnic violence. The report is to be submitted by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) within six weeks. The plea, filed by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR), demands a court-monitored SIT probe into the CM’s alleged role in the violence that killed over 200 people and displaced thousands in May 2023.The audio clips reportedly show Singh allowing Meitei groups to loot arms and incite violence. While the solicitor general opposed the petition, urging the matter be heard in the Manipur High Court, KOHUR’s advocate, Prashant Bhushan, called the contents "serious" and demanded a thorough investigation. The Supreme Court has set a hearing for March 24 to decide the next steps.The CM has denied the allegations, calling them part of a conspiracy, with an FIR already filed.
