The Toyota 1GR-FE is a very reliable engine. However, older examples seem to have one sticking point. And that sticking point is the infamous P0016 trouble code. It's quite often you'll come across an older Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner or Toyota FJ Cruiser with trouble code P0016. There are many cheap and quick remedies floating online on how to repair this trouble code; including cam sensors, variable valve timing solenoids and other remedies. However, the quickest way to determine if your Toyota truck does indeed have a stretched timing chain is by looking at the timing chain tensioner. Fortunately, checking the timing chain tensioner is very easy. There's a little plate that's held on by four 10mm fasteners. Once this plate is removed, you can see what the timing chain tensioner looks like and go from there.
