1) Keloid is a form of scar tissue that consists of an overgrowth of collagen at the site of an old wound, and often appears as a hard, rubbery outgrowth from the skin (look up pictures, it's not very pretty.)

2) The word used here for “to glitter” has a slightly ominous connotation, as in, something which glitters too much, in a sinister way.
