Angel Sierra and Étienne Naude teamed up to pull off a playful geoscience stunt known as an “Earth sandwich.” In January 2020, 19-year-old Naude, a computer science student in Auckland, used an online tool to find the exact antipodal point of his location—nearly 12,700 km away—in southern Spain.

Naude then reached out on a Spanish Reddit board, looking for someone to help place the opposite slice of bread. That’s when Angel Sierra, a 34-year-old chef from near Ronda, responded. Despite a 12-hour time difference and various planning challenges, they coordinated a synchronized drop: Naude at Bucklands Beach in New Zealand and Sierra at the exact antipode in Spain, each placing a slice of bread at the same time.

Naude even went the extra mile, laser-engraving a loaf of bread with an Earth sandwich design at his university’s makerspace, while Sierra arranged nine slices to ensure a perfect visual alignment. They both shared photos of the event—Naude beside his slice in New Zealand, and Sierra with his spread in Spain—celebrating a fun and imaginative project.

The effort became more than a joke—it created a unique connection between two strangers on opposite sides of the world, showing how a simple idea can unite people through curiosity and creativity.
