How much can home lighting affect your electric bill anyway? Well, if you compare traditional incandescent light bulbs to energy-efficient light bulbs — light emitting diodes, or LEDs, for short — the answer is: quite a bit. In fact, LEDs use at least 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. One traditional 60-watt bulb used for two hours per day at an electricity rate of 11 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) costs $4.80 annually, compared to just $1.00 per year for a 12-watt LED. Multiply that by all the bulbs in your house, and you’re looking at some serious energy conservation. Check out our video for more on how energy-efficient homes use lighting.

Let's shed some light on … well … lights! Save electricity by replacing your standard light bulbs with candles — just kidding! You thought I was gonna say compact fluorescents (CFLs), right? Those are a great option, and their light quality has improved the last few years. But, if you really want natural-looking light and are willing to pay just a little more, check out LEDs. You might be surprised by how much prices have come down.

Moving outside, don't forget to replace porch security lights with CFLs or LEDs. And think about using solar-powered lights for your landscaping or garden.
