A graduate teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma who gave a student a zero on an essay will "no longer have instructional duties at the University", according to a statement released by OU on Monday.
OU junior Samantha Fulnecky claimed religious discrimination after receiving a failing grade on an assignment in an online psychology course.
Fulnecky followed two available processes at OU: the grade appeals process and a formal claim of illegal religious discrimination. The grade appeal sided in favor of Fulnecky and removed the assignment from her total point value of the class. The investigation into the discrimination claim has finished, but OU said it does not release findings for such investigations.
The Provost and the academic Dean reviewed the facts, according to OU, and examined the graduate teaching assistant's prior grading standards and patterns.
The University said in a statement, in part, "... it was determined that the graduate teaching assistant was arbitrary in the grading of this specific paper. The graduate teaching assistant will no longer have instructional duties at the University."
