If you've noticed brown leaves on the tips of trees in your neighborhood recently, you're not alone, and you can thank the 17-year cicadas.

News 13 asked Alison Arnold, an extension agent with the NC Cooperative Extension, about the trees. She wrote, in part, "The damage [is] caused by the female laying eggs in the end of the branches. These will eventually break off and drop to the ground. On a smaller tree, the damage can be quite extensive and cause the tree to lose its overall form or structure. Although it won't kill the tree, it will change its appearance."

Arnold also said oak, maple, dogwood, hickory, and fruit trees are favored by cicadas and that large trees will drop the tip with no problem. However, smaller trees may require light pruning to correct the damage.
