Three villages in Hong Kong’s New Territories are soon to be demolished to make way for public housing estates. But villagers have vowed to stay until the government provides a resettlement plan that allows them to continue their rural way of life.

As part of a development project introduced by the government in 2015, the 5.6-hectare (14-acre) green belt in Wang Chau, Yuen Long covering the villages of Wing Ning Tsuen, Fung Chi Tsuen and Yeung Uk San Tsuen, aims to build 4,000 public housing units.

The housing project drew heavy criticism after it was revealed that officials had scaled down the development area, and shelved original plans to develop a nearby brownfield site.
