Most people in New York once laughed at the idea that rich families would ever choose to live in the same building as other people.
In the late 1800s, wealth meant privacy. It meant owning your own house, your own servants, your own carriage, and your own front door. Sharing walls with neighbors—especially strangers—felt cheap, crowded, and embarrassing. Apartments were seen as places for immigrants, laborers, and the poor, not for bankers or business leaders.
So when a massive stone building began rising beside Central Park, far from the fashionable streets of the city, many New Yorkers were convinced it was a terrible mistake.
The structure looked like a fortress pulled straight out of Europe. Its heavy walls, steep roofs, and deep archways made it seem more like a castle than a home. And its location only made things worse. At the time, the Upper West Side was barely developed. There were open fields, wooden shacks, and rough dirt roads. Some areas were still used for grazing animals.
