A Detailed Review of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 | Microsoft's Surface Duo 2 Two-Screen Phone Review
Folding phones may be the future, but they are now in their infancy. And, at this strange moment when businesses are still figuring out how to make a folding phone work, there are two camps: Samsung and others that fold a large screen down to a smaller, pocketable size, and Microsoft, which combines two displays with a hinge to produce a digital book-like device.
Microsoft's first effort at this, the Surface Duo in 2020, was a flop. The original Duo featured an eye-catching appearance and lots of fascinating aspects, but it was, to put it frankly, a hot mess. It lacks current smartphone features such as a good camera, 5G, wireless charging, NFC, and a modern CPU. Worse, the software was unreliable and hard to use, with frequent crashes, poor touch responsiveness, and restricted third-party program compatibility for its unique dual-screen capabilities.
Microsoft looks to have corrected many of the original's flaws with this year's try, the $1,499.99-and-up Surface Duo 2. It boasts an updated CPU, a streamlined design, a larger battery, 5G connectivity, NFC support, fresh software, and a real, genuine camera.
However, after you get beyond all of the spec-sheet tweaks, the Duo 2 still suffers from many of the same faults that afflicted the first model. This is still a work in progress, and I wouldn't advocate purchasing it until Microsoft gets it out.
