Nearly 600 years ago, at the sacred Kamakhya Temple in Assam, a devoted priest named Kendukalai performed evening prayers with closed eyes, where Mother Kamakhya herself was believed to appear and dance.

When Koch dynasty’s King Naranarayan forced to witness this divine dance through a hidden wall opening, he instantly lost his eyesight.

Goddess Kamakhya then gave a fearsome curse — that no member of the Koch royal family shall ever enter her temple again, or else they would either go blind… or die.

To this day, Koch dynasty descendants avoid entering the Kamakhya Temple.

Some traditions further say that Maa Kamakhya later turned Kendukalai into stone, while another belief says she beheaded him — and his head fell at Kalaigaon, where the Muradevar Temple still stands.
