Fast robotic cobot sanding of Marlan solid surface bathtub - FerRobotics ACF-K

INITIAL SITUATION
Marlan solid surface is a composite manufacturer and produces the eponymous solid surface material Marlan, which is used to cast kitchen plates, washbasins, bathtubs and shower trays. The initial production volume of 30 - 40 units has now increased to about 900. Sanding accounts for around 80% of the heavy, repetitive manual work that requires trained personnel. That's why it has been automated for about 3.5 years. However, the cobot, including the robotic tools previously used, did not meet the desired time and quality targets. An alternative was sought and found at FerRobotics.

THE PROCESS
The previous automated sanding processes were all unsatisfying because the conventional force/torque-sensor technology was not sufficient for this type of surface processing. Speed was lost, there were problems with touchdown or maintaining contact and the contact force was always too low or irregular.

OPTIMIZED AUTOMATION SOLUTION
A cobot in combination with the FerRobotics ACF-K end-effector and the patented Active Compliant Technology now achieves the desired goals. The new, now possible, faster robot speed of 250 mm/sec. and the constant contact force of the sensitive sanding tool were essential for the success. The cobot no longer stops, the FerRobotics ACF-K sands the complex surface of the bathtub perfectly and, with its 35 mm stroke, easily maintains contact with the surface. Previous tools often lost surface contact, which led to unsightly sanding marks. Ultimately, the processing time was also reduced from 5-6 hours to a sensational 1 hour 20 minutes. The system is running successfully and can be expanded further in the future by using an industrial robot for even more speed and simply duplicated for other processes.
