The Chrysler 300 launched at midyear as a reminder of the old letter series Chrysler cars. The Cordoba based 300 coupe got a crossbar grille, bucket seats, and a whopper 195 bhp. 360 cube V8, the biggest engine offered. Other big engines were gone this year but this " new " Cordoba got that big engine. Trouble is on the horizon at Chrysler. This year's fuel scare and soaring prices from double digit inflation took their toll on Chrysler where model output dropped 15% and Chrysler's market share dipped below 10 percent. Chrysler's financial woes worsened with sale down over 17% and the corporation lost a record $1.1 billion. Federal tax credits were denied by the government. Looking at the production figures of the LeBaron, Cordoba, Newport and New Yorker in my research the units produced are pathetic. The Regular Cordoba coupe cost $6,337 but the "new" 300 cost $8,034 a remarkable difference. All Chrysler products this year look good to me, but all in the eye of the beholder. This glorified Cordoba shown here, the 300, looks so much like a regular Cordoba, but there are pronounced differences. The appearance changes to the Cordoba were the following: a cross-hair grill with a '300' emblem in the middle, front fender gills, special 7" x 15" road wheels, also with a 300 emblem in the center cap, and wide white-lettered Goodyear radial tires and faux vents on the front fenders. Almost all the cars were Spinnaker White, though a few were built to special order and painted rallye red, with a red interior. The interiors were Corinthian red leather, a console shift automatic transmission, and a rallye instrument cluster with a tachometer and an extra stiff suspension set-up. It received positive reviews from the automotive press for its handling and respectable acceleration. Unfortunately it came along just as the economic recession of 1979-81 set in, and many were still on the dealers lots into 1980. They are now garnering interest in the collector circles, and clean low mileage cars are beginning to fetch significant dollars. This was the first 300 that was not a true hardtop; the Cordoba body had frameless door glass but featured a thick "B" post formed by a window built into the wide "C" pillar. Perhaps the Chrysler Corp., was attempting to promote a different car to enhance it's sale status. Unfortunately, that didn't work. Thanks very much for viewing this factory fresh 1979 Chrysler 300.
