Hi, today we are going to discuss an important topic in nephrology, a renal transplant or a kidney transplant. It is a procedure wherein a donor voluntarily donates a kidney and it goes into the person who needs it. So typically done for patients with chronic renal failure, we call end stage renal disease, that is both the kidneys are damaged irreparably and patients are on dialysis. Those are the patients who typically need a kidney transplant. It is typically done by one of the two methods. You have a live transplant or you can have a cadaver transplant. By live transplant. a live individual voluntarily. A near and dear one of the patient voluntarily and willfully donates one of his kidney to the patient who is in need so that we can do the transplant and they can do. Both of them can function normally. On the other hand, when there is no scope for a live donor, we get an organ from a brain dead people. Typically, it's called a cadaver donation. Patients who are brain dead due to medical conditions, due to road traffic accidents or other reasons. After getting the consent from the near and dear ones of the patients involved, the organs are harvested and that goes to the patients in the government waiting list that is called a cadaver donation. In addition to these two there is something else third one which is called organ donation after cardiac arrest. That is a patient who uh has a cardiac arrest if you can harvest the organs during the initial few minutes to one or two hours weekend those organs can be used to patients who are in need. In India the majority of the transplant are live donation which accounts for 90 to 95 percent of the cases. Rest 5 percent I would say it is a cadaver donation. This disease donation or the donation after cardiac death, is yet to pick up in our country. Thank you.
