You will learn about the structure of a cell, especially the nucleus which contains genetic material called chromosomes. This genetic material acts like a rulebook that guides the cell’s behavior. When cells divide, this rulebook is copied. Sometimes, errors occur during copying. These are called genetic mutations.
Dr Kammar explains how the immune system usually detects and removes abnormal cells. But when these faulty cells escape detection or fail to self-destruct, they begin multiplying without control. That is how cancer can begin.
The video also covers the causes of these genetic mutations. These include inherited genetic factors, environmental exposures, and lifestyle habits like smoking, heavy alcohol use, radiation exposure, and certain harmful chemicals.
You will also understand that a single mutation is not enough to cause cancer. It usually takes five or six key genetic mutations before uncontrolled cell division begins and forms a tumor.
Dr Praveen Kammar emphasizes that cancer does not develop overnight. For example, it can take 10 to 15 years for colon polyps to turn into cancer. Lung cancer due to smoking may take 20 to 22 years.
