Replacement of N47 timing chain (in this case an e87 120d however the procedure is the same for all n47 engine cars from the 1 series to the f10 520d and f30 318 and 320d)

Lower timing chain had stretched and the guides were worn causing the tensioner to be at its maximum extension, meaning when the car starts there is a chain rattle noise until the tensioner's get hydraulic pressure. At this stage its a matter of time until the chain or tensioner snaps and fires the pistons into the valves.

Fortunately on this occasion it was caught early by the owner and repairs were simple and minimal.

Engine was removed to make it easier to work and to ensure we complete the best job possible.

Its possible to complete this job with the engine in situ but due to space confines it can very often lead to poor sealing on mating surfaces and incorrectly torqued fasteners. We take no chances with your engine so it comes out where it can be worked on unimpeded.

All parts are always genuine BMW parts.

Total time was around 13 hours give or take a few mins. For billing purposes this is normally charged at 10 hours labour
