The 1970 UK General Election

Описание к видео The 1970 UK General Election

In this video I explore the UK General Election of 1970.
At this point in time, Harold Wilson had been Prime Minister for 6 years and the polls predicted that he was heading for an historic third term, but it wasn't to be. Instead, Edward Heath overturned Wilson's majority, winning a majority for the Conservative Party of 30 seats in the House of Commons. This was an historic election for two reasons: it was the first election at which 18 years were allowed to vote and it was a rare example of a government going into an election with a majority only to see it be overturned by a party that would itself win a majority - a feat that would't happen again until the 2024 election.
