Performance Predictor: A Data Mining Tool and Machine Learning Software for Student Performance Outcomes

Project Description
Students' success in academic performance plays a very key role not only for students but also in educational institutions as it provides a metric for the institution’s performance. With the introduction of online learning platforms in most institutions, the University of Zambia being one of them, educators are able to collect volumes of data in order to ascertain which student is at risk of poor academic performance. Prediction of learning outcomes has been a critical task due to the large sums of data that needs to be analyzed and while some prediction software provides necessary information for an educator to follow up students who are at risk of failure, much has not been addressed on correction mechanisms and interventions that would curb the problem of student low academic performance. Therefore, the performance predictor software discussed in this proposal will be developed in such a way that through the use of data mining and machine learning it will predict students who are at risk of failing, classify the affected students into high risk, medium risk and low risk depending on the results. The model will be a standalone platform and will be used by ICT 1110 lecturers and tutors and will additionally identify these students based on the input with the intent of executing appropriate correction interventions.
