In late October of 2007, Christi Charron, a High School Senior and Cheerleader from Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, was surfing the web and looking for information on a free PlayStation 3 download/game called "Home". It was due to be released by Sony the next year and supposedly very similar in many ways to Second Life (SL). Christi had never even heard of SL at this point, but found some information about SL while searching for Sony Home. Christi was excited to find that SL offered all the things that the PS3 game "Home" promised and much more, plus it was already up and running!
Christi thought that if she had her own uniform, the rest would fall into place. Since the shoes seemed to be the hardest thing to create, she started with them first. Two weeks later she had the uniform, shoes and original poms created. She asked her immediate friends to join, and they did. They weren't at all that interested in cheerleading though, so Christi then went actively hunting for a few more squad members. She recruited at dance contests and contacted the winners for interviews.
December (2007), Christi rented an office for the SLCS Headquarters on the top floor of a skyscraper in a business sim, for $250 a week. Here she started working on the first Swimsuit Calendar (the 2008 calendar).
Christi recruited one of the first members, Sunshine Yatsenko, who then recruited her good friend Liza Mayflower. Word of mouth spread from there and people began coming from all over to join the new squad, and probably more accurately, to be in the calendar.
By January of 2009, the popularity of the squad took over and work on the 2008 Calendar that was still underway was taking up most of Christi's SL time. There was one HUGE problem though, SLCS had no animations. Solving this issue was harder than they first realized. Christi was broke, and she couldn't afford to buy animations for each squad member. She began camping 24/7 to be able to pay for any she might find.
By the summer of 2009 SLCS had grown incredibly popular. Classes had become so overcrowded classes because so many were joining. The squad was growing too large, VERY quickly. At that time, Srooc and Char suggested we start charging for the tryout kit, to not only help cover tier, but to cut down on the number of cheerleaders in the squad.
In the Summer 0f 2010, Srooc (It's Coors spelled backwards FYI) pushed for SLCS to move to it's own sim. With a major contribution from her and many, many others, we were able to buy our own sim for $400 USD. After a sim-naming contest, the name "Cheertopia" was suggested by Persephone. This quickly won over everyone and became the name of our new home.
After perfecting the CheerMaster version 3, the squad started to move into new endeavors while maintaining the core principles the Squad was founded on.
SLCS has an INCREDIBLE amount of talent today and continues to gain quality squad members monthly. SLCS is a democratically run business and it's major decisions are made by it's squad members through popular vote. Although SLCS does have internal conflicts as any large group of people would, it runs about as smoothly as any business can thanks to it's talented members, because of them and it's wonderful customers and large VIP Group, SLCS will continue to be a success and will continue to move forward for as long as Second Life is around, and far beyond that.
