The four time Olympic athlete and powerlifter Ilkka Nummisto was in his strongest condition in the World's Strongest Man 1986 competition. After three events Nummisto was in excellent positions battling Jon Pall Sigmarsson and Geoff Capes for the title of the strongest man in the world. In the car turn over Nummisto's biceps came off and the competition was over.

However Nummisto returned to the strongman competitions and took a bronze medal at the age of 46 in the World Strongest Man 1990 competition. At the age of 50 Ilkka Nummisto competed in the European Hercules competition and at the age of 57 he was involved in the Guinness World Record program.
