These beds happen to be 4'x8' but of course could be any dimension people wanted. We make them 4' wide because our 1/2" EMT conduit pipes bent in an arch will fit over them to turn them into mini low-tunnels if needed.
The wood is sourced from a local saw mill. Wherever you live you may find a saw mill that has offcuts, slabcuts, slabwood, live edge, wastewood.. ..Many names for a similar product. Often very very low cost or even free, these boards make for amazing raised bed building. The staves I made are from Black Locust which is ideal, but any wood would last at least a few years.
Filling these beds can be done in large part with old, rotten wood.... Abandoned firewood piles, big chunks from wood chipping, branches, etc., etc., leaves are nice too... Cleaning up old garden debris, raking off a lawn, collecting dropped branches in the woods, SO many sources of filling material. We then cover with soil, in our case leftovers from a pond dig, but maybe you have a ditch you want to dig nearby or a micro pond? You can get your soil for most of the fill from there! We will cap our beds in the last 2-4" with finished compost from our chicken system, which is made entirely from waste materials. Really works wonders!
Save that money and resource :)

We will share update video soon with how we mulch the walk ways and how we cap and finalize the soil on the beds.
