Michele Marie Somers, a well beauty queen and part time model from California. She had always cherished two things, her family and God. At 21, she met Martin, a 22 years old man, at an event for Mormon singles. Michele believed he was the man of her dreams, but her parents did not agree with that. They disapproved of his bold. They abrasive personality and felt uneasy around him, wishing that their beloved daughter would not date him.

Like Romeo and Juliet, her parents' disapproval only made Michele find her relationship with Martin more attractive. While her parents saw Martin as a narcissist, she believed he was a ambitious man, who had overcome a difficult childhood. When he threatened to end his life if she left him, she agreed to marry him. Then, they eloped and secretly wed in 1978.

Their honeymoon was short lived. Within six months of their marriage, Martin was sent to prison, leaving Michele to spend most of her time alone. Before meeting her, he had forged checks totaling $35,000. In addition to typical items like jewelry and clothing, he bought a grandfather clock, 60 pairs of socks, a refrigerator, and strangest of all, he bought enough chocolate covered cherries to last a year. He got the idea for check forgery from a TV program about check fraud, which claimed it could be done in 60 minutes. Martin thought he could do it even faster.
