Ken fishes throws the muddler when you can’t see the fish and the water is moving. If the water is slow and you see the fish, forget about it. Flip rocks and match your fly to the bugs you find and sneak in on those fish.
The muddler is a hard fly to find. If you can find a size 14, snatch up 4! Add a split shot to get the muddler down deep, Ken places the split shot about 18 inches in front of the muddler. Size and location of that weight will determine how the muddler casts and swims.
Kens favorite cast technique for the muddler or any streamer is the roll cast and let the muddler swing past the fish. Tease the fish by bringing the muddler up the hole then let the line go so the muddler has to start at the beginning of the hole. Bring him back through the hole like he is darting or nervous. Trout hate this and either want to eat the muddler or just kill him to get him out of the hole.
The muddler minnow is one of the easiest flys to use. You can’t screw this one up.
