Descralizing of the House of God

Modern day scientists tell us that there are no special places in the universe. The idea that heaven is above the stars and hell is below the earth is scoffed at by many academics. For them, the earth is not in a special, privileged, and central place, rather the earth’s position and its inhabitants are simply the product of chance…a result of a random big bang explosion. At one time, heaven was the Lord’s throne and the earth was His footstool, but now the universe and its stars, planets, and celestial bodies has become desacralized and secularized, with the aura of holy wonder being removed by modern teachers. The heavens, in the past, were seen as an icon of the infinite and unchanging God, proclaiming the glory of the Most High and showing forth the work of His Hands. The universe was also seen as a palace for the Church on earth…a cathedral of stars, with our own sun and moon, surrounding us and serving us. But the modern intellectual elites now tell us that our existence…our life…is meaningless. We have no purpose. We are simply accidents. Our place in the universe is no better than any other celestial body. This view of a purposeless, directionless, meaningless purely material universe with no special places or positions, and with no room for the good Lord, eventually affected the way that we build churches. Modern church architecture over the last 50 to 60 years, with rare exceptions, became desacralized. Modern Catholic churches were not built to be special places for sacred worship, but rather they were purposely made to look ordinary…like any other building. In today’s gradual psalm for Holy Mass it reads: I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord. In the historical Book of Genesis, the son of Isaac, namely, Jacob had a very mysterious dream in which the presence of the Lord was shown to him…where angels were seen ascending and descending upon a mystical ladder between heaven and earth. Being seized with a holy fear, Jacob cried out: How terrible is this place! This is the house of God and the gate of heaven! The church building is God’s House. It was built for the purpose of worshipping Him in a public way and the structure itself ought to be immediately recognized as such.
