What is Active Directory:

#. Active Directory is a Database or Centralized Collection of your Users, Services, and Resource etc.
#. These Users, Services, Resources and Everything in Active Directory is called as Objects
#. It stores all this data in Hierarchical Structure.
#. The Hierarchical Structure helps in finding the details of the resources that are connected to Network
#. So we can say that Active Directory is used to Mange devices on Network
#. Active Directory is Included In Windows Server Starting From Windows Server 2008

Active Directory Domain Service

Active Directory provides different services and these services comes under Active Directory Domain Service or AD DS (ADDS).
1). Domain Service: It provides login authentication Service between users and domains

2). Certificate Service: It generates and handles the certificates. With these certificates users can share the information in encrypted secured way.
The encryption is done with a public key.

3). Directory Federation Service:Provides Single Sign On (SSO) authentication for different applications in the same session

4). Light Weight Directory Service: It is a directory access protocol that provides the support for Directory enabled applications
AD LDS provides much of the same features as AD DS but it does not requires the deployment or domain controllers or Domains as required in AD DS.

5). Rights Management: This Service controls the information rights and data access. It determines whether you can access a particular folder or not. It encrypts the data to limit the access.

Why we need active Directory?
We need Active Directory to create a manageable environment
Also We need AD to secure the environment and manage permissions for each and every user/computer by creating groups.
