Pothos is one of the easiest houseplants to grow in the plant world, but still, it doesn’t forgive some mistakes that many plant growers do. If you’re one of them? Find out how to avoid that in this post.

Oversized Potting

First up, the pot size. Using an oversized pot might seem generous, but it can be detrimental. Larger pots hold more soil, thus more moisture, leading to root rot. Plus, it can cause your Pothos to focus on root growth over leaf development. Stick to a pot just 1 or 2 sizes larger than the rootball.

Using Garden Soil

Using garden soil? Think again. While not immediately harmful, it may hinder your plant's growth due to poor drainage and potential soil-borne diseases. Mix in coarse sand, peat moss, perlite, compost, or vermiculite for better texture and sterilize the soil to avoid problems.

Ignoring Stress Signs

Yellowing or droopy leaves? Maybe it’s overwatering or poor drainage. Brown, brittle foliage? That could mean low humidity or underwatering. And if the leaves look burnt or pale, it could be too much sun or overfertilization. Pay attention to these signs and adjust your care routine accordingly.

Regular Cleaning Neglect

Pothos leaves gather dust, which hampers their photosynthesis. If you're not wiping them with a soft, damp cloth, you're missing out on an essential care step. Regular cleaning helps them breathe and thrive.

Lack of Support

Pothos are natural climbers. Without proper support like a trellis, moss pole, or bamboo stick, they can become unruly. Providing support also encourages bigger leaf growth, making your plant even more impressive.

Incorrect Fertilization

Less is more when it comes to fertilizing Pothos. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to a quarter strength, and fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks. An amazing tip? Drench the moss pole supporting your Pothos for consistent feeding.

Ignoring Seasonal Adjustments

Seasonal changes affect Pothos too. In winter, they need less water and fertilizer. Avoid cold drafts and reduce watering during humid weather. In summer, protect them from direct sunlight and hot air, especially in warm climates.

Neglecting Pruning

Is your Pothos getting leggy? Regular pruning is key. It helps maintain the desired shape, encourages bushier growth, and gets rid of diseased or damaged parts. Avoiding pruning can lead to a messy appearance.

Using Hard Water

Pothos are sensitive to mineral-rich hard water. It can cause leaf discoloration and white crust formation on the soil. To prevent this, use filtered, RO, or distilled water.

Overlooking Pest Infestations

Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Ignoring these signs can harm your plant. Regular checks and prompt treatment are crucial.

Overlooking Rootbound Conditions

Pothos adapt well, but they can become root-bound. If you see roots peeking out of drainage holes or topsoil, it's time to repot. This ensures continued healthy growth.

Inadequate Lighting

Pothos can survive in low light, but they still need some sun exposure. However, too much direct sunlight isn't good either. Strike a balance for optimal growth.

Not Changing Water Regularly

For water-grown Pothos, changing the water regularly is crucial. Stagnant water leads to algae, bacteria, and fungi, competing with your plant for nutrients and causing diseases.
