जुलाई 1947, Shimla की एक meeting में East Bengal से आए Muslim League के एक member ने Sir Cyril Radcliffe से कहा - "Sir, Darjeeling Pakistan में दे दीजिए... मेरी family हर summer वहां vacation मनाने जाती है!" Radcliffe के होश उड़ गए - लाखों लोगों की किस्मत तय हो रही थी और ये शख्स अपनी family की vacation की बात कर रहा था! लेकिन Darjeeling से भी बड़ा सवाल था - Lahore का। 1941 की census में Lahore की 64.5% आबादी Muslim थी, तो religious majority के हिसाब से Pakistan में जाना चाहिए था। लेकिन शहर की 80% factories, 66% shops, सारे hospitals, colleges, और सबसे बड़ा Shah Alami Market - सब Hindus और Sikhs के पास था। Guru Arjan Dev की समाधि, Maharaja Ranjit Singh की नगरी, Punjab की cultural capital Lahore... फिर ये Pakistan को क्यों मिला?..
