The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine that was invented by German engineer Felix Wankel in the 1950s. Unlike traditional engines that use reciprocating pistons to generate power, the Wankel engine uses a rotary design. The engine is characterized by its simplicity and compact design, as well as high power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios.

The Wankel engine works by using a triangular-shaped rotor that rotates within an epitrochoidal-shaped housing. The rotor seals against the housing to create three combustion chambers, which are filled with fuel and air, and then ignited to produce power. The rotor completes a full cycle of combustion as it rotates around its axis, producing continuous power output.

Wankel engines were widely used in a variety of applications, including automobiles, motorcycles, boats, and aircraft, due to their unique design and efficiency. However, they were not widely adopted because of issues with reliability, durability, and fuel efficiency.

Today, Wankel engines are largely obsolete and have been replaced by more efficient and reliable engine designs, such as four-stroke and two-stroke internal combustion engines and electric motors. Nevertheless, the concept of the Wankel engine continues to be studied and refined by engineers, and it may find new applications in the future.
