Homelessness surged nationwide by 18.1 percent in 2024 -- and although the population may not be that high in the Ohio Valley -- officials say there is a notable increase.

"We have an estimated 115 people that are either homeless, dealing with homelessness right now, or dealing with an emergency shelter at this time," Catholic Charities West Virginia Neighborhood Center Coordinator Derek Lantz said.

That statistic deriving from the five counties that Catholic Charities serves in the Northern Panhandle.

Lantz says on average, the nonprofit has been supplying breakfast and dinner to 120 people in house daily -- a slight increase from last summer.

"I think it's a little bit of an uptick,” he said. “It's not major, nothing out of the ordinary. "

January marked 1 year since the city of Wheeling enacted its camping ban on public property.

Since then, the camps have been relocated more than once, including the most recent behind the Fitzsimmons Dog Park. But as of Tuesday, the property seems empty.

"Over this past week, there was a fire at the camps that took out six tents that are homes to these folks," Lantz said.
