We wake at Dunnet to wind tearing across the beach, snow driving sideways, and the kind of cold that seeps into everything. A short walk with the dogs is enough to tell us this weather isn’t finished with us — but it’s impossible to know how bad it’s going to get, or when.
What follows is one of the most changeable days of the entire trip.
Driving north and west through the far reaches of Scotland, we’re caught between blizzards and blue skies — one moment fighting snow-covered roads and whiteouts, the next driving beneath clear skies with mountains laid bare around us. Every mile brings a new decision: push on, slow down, or stop and wait it out.
This isn’t reckless travel. It’s careful, deliberate movement — watching the weather, listening to reports, and staying ready to hunker down if we need to. Supplies are topped up, fuel tanks filled, and plans adjusted in real time as conditions shift around us.
Despite the tension, this becomes one of the most beautiful driving days we’ve ever experienced. Scotland shows both its harshness and its generosity in equal measure — dramatic winter light, empty roads, and landscapes that feel vast, ancient, and alive.
By nightfall, the weather turns again. As we settle in, battered by wind and snow, it becomes clear this storm still hasn’t peaked — and tomorrow may bring something far more serious.
This is Episode 5 of our Scotland winter road trip series.
