CNN recently ran a story where Dr. Sanjay Gupta examined the valuable role that ketamine infusion therapy can play in the treatment of severe depression. This story shows the growing awareness and understanding of the general public and those in the medical profession that ketamine really changes the paradigm of treatment for severe depression. In this video Dr. Carl J. Bonnett, the founder and Medical Director of Klarisana, offers some elaboration on some of the points made in the CNN story based on our experience treating patients.

One of the most important points that that what makes ketamine unique is that it is more than just a biochemical reaction. We feel that the "experiential" aspect is not a side effect but rather an essential part of the therapy.

Secondly, we would caution against adopting a mindset where one is counting on ketamine to reduce suicidality "in a matter of hours." While there is evidence that a single ketamine infusion can reduce suicidal ideation quickly we feel this will give many people a false sense of hope and some very unrealistic expectations. Most of our patients start to have improvement after 3-4 infusions and almost 80% have improvement by the sixth infusion.
